Can a wound heal on its own?

Healthy adults heal small acute wounds without intervention within 1–3 weeks. Chronic wounds — those open longer than 4 weeks, or any wound in a patient with diabetes, vascular disease, or limited mobility — usually will not heal without active treatment and continue to expand and become infected if left alone.
