Medicare Part B may cover surgical dressings used for a wound caused by, or treated with, a qualifying surgical procedure when the applicable requirements are met. It does not cover every gauze pad or over-the-counter dressing, and quantity, replacement frequency, supplier, documentation, and cost-sharing rules apply.
Coverage may include a primary dressing placed directly on a qualifying wound and necessary secondary dressings used to secure or absorb drainage. A clinician's order should identify the wound, product, size, quantity, frequency, and expected duration.
Items may be denied when the wound does not meet the surgical-dressing definition, quantities exceed policy limits without support, records do not document drainage or dressing frequency, the supplier is not eligible, or products are obtained as ordinary self-purchased household supplies.
Payment can be bundled into another provider's payment during a covered home-health episode, hospital stay, or certain facility stay rather than billed separately as DMEPOS. Patients and caregivers should confirm which organization is responsible before ordering.
Medical necessity, current records, Medicare assignment, deductible and coinsurance, and any secondary plan affect the final amount. Medicare Advantage plans may use network suppliers and authorization rules. An order, shipment, or benefits quote is not a guarantee of payment.
